If it can be wr…

If it can be written or thought, it can be filmed. – Stanley Kubrick

I met a guy at TIFF yesterday with this Kubrick quote tattooed on his arm. Inspiring stuff.

“You know what …

“You know what your problem is, it’s that you haven’t seen enough movies – all of life’s riddles are answered in the movies.” – Steve Martin

People don’t give movies enough credit. Too many people believe that movies are just a source of quick and cheap entertainment. Granted, cinema is a key source of entertainment, and has been for more than a hundred years now. But it’s much more than that.

What people fail to acknowledge is cinema’s ability to make its viewer feel, think, and believe. Cinema is art. Film is the only medium that has the unique ability to record and reveal simultaneously, as noted by theorist Sigfried Kracauer in his essay The Redemption of Physical Reality. Through the eye of the camera, we can see things in ways we never would have dreamed possible before. Cinema realizes our greatest fears and our greatest triumphs, all in the span of a few hours or less.

A movie gives its viewer a chance to view another life, another time, another place. Another story. We learn emotion, from sadness a la Bicycle Thieves to heartbreak courtesy of Titanic‘s Jack and Rose. We’ve travelled through time in a DeLorean, ran with gangsters through New York City in the 50’s, and sang our hearts out alongside a whole cast of cartoon characters. We’ve lived a thousand times through movies, and through film we have conquered the impossible. And that is something truly remarkable.

“After nourishm…

“After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.” – Philip Pullman

Funny, isn’t it? So many people don’t even recognize the need for stories. The need for imagination. The need for adventure.

But it’s in everything we do. We find it in the books we read, the movies we watch, the games we play. Despite not recognizing its significance, we always come back to storytelling. It is the root of our humanity. It is our history; what defines our pasts, presents, and futures.

And it’s a hell of a lot of fun.

That’s why this blog exists. To find new fun and to discuss these adventures. Together, let’s find new stories. Let’s read books, let’s watch movies, let’s play games, and let’s get out there.
